Re: Your Dad, Daddy

Hi =
Dotty,

My heart breaks for both of you in this entire =
scenario.
Matt and I have a lot of moving parts =
right now and our trip to Maz this spring is questionable. Regardless of =
that you two need to do what is best for you so PLEASE don=E2=80=99t let =
that play into any equation of when you leave =
Maz.
You and I talked about some of Dad=E2=80=99s=
triggers and the ability to hear is at the top of his list of triggers. =
Not having been at all of the appointments like you have makes it =
difficult to give much insight.  My first reaction is to call =
bullshit on the neurological stuff because it just doesn=E2=80=99t make =
sense to me that he can hear for 12 hours after a visit and then not. I =
think that finding someone in the US is the right idea but just not the =
one he went to right be before  you went to Maz.  You said the =
good one left=E2=80=A6 where did they move to?  I wouldn=E2=80=99t =
take the neurological stuff to heart yet until it has been confirmed in =
th US. Kind of like when the Dr is Maz told you guys about his numbness =
stuff.  Not that they aren=E2=80=99t good doctors but 2nd opinions =
are always necessary to sort it all out.
In =
terms of the heart stuff, sounds like a good idea to get that all =
checked out in TX.
While it=E2=80=99s hard to =
accept this, I totally get why he feels the way he does.  He is so =
isolated from everything mainly from the hearing aspect. =
Wheelchairs can get him where he needs to go while it would be a =
mental blow for him but it seems like inability to hear is the root of =
his demons.
As an semi-outsider looking in =
(since I only get glimpses of the day to day with visits) I would =
encourage you two to decide where he is most comfortable for now and =
where he can find the most peace.  That=E2=80=99s really the only =
thing you can do until doctor visits in the US take place. The only =
thing he has is hope that things can improve.  While we can see him =
as alive and kicking, he does not see that as he is struggling with his =
isolation from the world.
I=E2=80=99m sure all =
that I have said here is not something you haven=E2=80=99t already =
thought of as you have been a rock for him.  I know from my =
standpoint it is easier for me to see you guys when you=E2=80=99re in =
TX. And I was planning to come again in the early summer if we didn=E2=80=99=
t get to Maz this spring.  It is definitely on my priority list for =
more frequent visits to you and Dad.  The time together gets more =
precious.
Please call me ANYTIME you want to =
talk, vent, or anything.  I can=E2=80=99t imagine how hard it is =
for you living through this.  You are so good to Dad and for that I =
am so grateful. Also DO NOT hesitate to let me know if there is =
something I can do from my end.  I am working on an email to him to =
bring him up to date on goings on here. Travel has kept me busy, we went =
to CT to see Jamie and family and I just got back from FL from visiting =
my friend, Barb.
Love you so much, Steph

Subject: Your Dad, =
Daddy

=EF=BB=BFWe arrived on March 6 so we have been here 20 =
days.  Before we left we got no satisfaction from his new ENT in =
the Woodlands with 2 visits. She did not re-program his hearing aids. =
All talk and no action. She was his last doctor on March 5th. =

In December his good audiologist left =
from a great ENT in Montgomery – near Conroe. She was the one who sold =
him the really good hearing aids and had done a good job of maintaining =
them. So since early December he has not been hearing great with them. =
We found only ONE audiologist in Mazatlan who services the Phonex brand =
and today made the 4th time he has gone to her. Dr. Lopez. She said =
nothing is wrong with them after inspections, re-programming them, etc. =
She is compassionate and accommodating but after she fixes them, they =
don=E2=80=99t work 12 hours afterwards. Today, she told him that it is =
his brain that needs to process the new programs – more volume and more =
clarity that she has enabled. She told us as you age, the brain has to =
work hard to process hearing. She told him he must not give up on the =
hearing aids and to stop using the $99 amplifier unit we have reverted =
to for 3 months.

He must give his =
brain time to adjust to the hearing aid=E2=80=99s new settings. She went =
as far as to say that he has a neurological =E2=80=9Csomething=E2=80=9D =
(malfunction? i can=E2=80=99t remember her words)  – which was =
devastating to hear.  I could see it on his face and feel in my =
heart.   He must focus and be more attentive to process the =
words he is hearing.

So, we got =
home and he said he didn=E2=80=99t want to live like this – no quality =
of life when he can=E2=80=99t hear. I told him I would talk slower and =
stronger.  He said he has enjoyed being here in Mazatlan. =

1.  He wants to return to USA to =
go to the best ENT in Houston.  He already has one of the top =
levels of Phonex – so it is not the hearing aids. =

2.  He also said that he wanted =
his heart doctor to perform the test where he checks for blockages in =
the arteries that might be making him VERY TIRED all the time; wanting =
to sleep lots; have small =E2=80=9Cevents=E2=80=9D (episodes/seisures) =
when he hasn=E2=80=99t even had a drink. =

That is getting more and more =
common when he gets out of the car or walks a few steps – his eyes glaze =
over and he stops – but looks like he can =E2=80=9Cmelt=E2=80=9D any =
minute.  Many times when I don=E2=80=99t see his eyes, I see the =
anonymous people on the street or hallway gaze at him like they are =
concerned.

We have not gone out much =
except to art class, store or audiologist and a lunch here and there. =
But he is always very tired and prefers to take several naps a day =
even before drinking.

After drinking =
at night, these events are compounded. =

So – back to returning to USA for =
these appointments – of course I support him. He thinks he won=E2=80=99t =
make it to his 87th birthday in three months if he doesn=E2=80=99t =
return and see these doctors.

But, we =
should have commitments from the doctors for scheduled appointment =
before we return.  Last year we hurried home in May and didn=E2=80=99=
t have appointments until September.

I =
just wanted y=E2=80=99all to know =E2=80=9Cwhere he is at the moment=E2=80=
=9D.  I so wish he could have a positive outlook. =

Love, Mama / =
Dotty
